Forget the Kids, Mommy Wants to Watch a Grown-Up DVD

If you are like me, you rarely get to watch movies that aren't rated-G. By the time the kiddos are in bed and I pop in a grown-up movie, I am asleep before the opening credits are finished. I managed to steal away and watch a few movies in the past few weeks. Here are a few of them:

The Accidental Husband
Rated PG-13

I can't get enough Colin Firth. I would marry him if I could (but why ruin the fantasy, maybe I could just date him for a while, LOL!). My beloved Colin costars with Uma Thurman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (if you watch Grey's Anatomy, you know him as Denny Duquette) in The Accidental HusbandThe Accidental Husband.

Of course this romantic comedy follows the usual formula: a man and woman are to be married and someone comes along throwing a wrench in things. But I enjoyed this fresh take on the standard theme.

I love Bollywood movies and I loved the bit of Indian music and ceremony that was worked into the movie. If you are looking for a chick flick, pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy the eye candy in this romantic film.

(From the DVD:) Firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) finds his life turned upside-down when his fiancée suddenly calls off their pending nuptials per the recommendation of radio love guru Dr. Emma Lloyd (Uma Thurman). Determined to get back at this "love doctor," Sullivan forges a fake marriage license, "accidentally" marrying him to Emma, who's already engaged to Richard (Colin Firth). But as Patrick's charms begin to wear Emma down, she must decide which of these bachelors is her "Mr. Right." Also starring Sam Shepard, Justina Machado and Isabella Rossellini in this romantic comedy that proves even the experts need to learn a few love lessons now and then.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Rated PG

I am sure you enjoyed Night at the Museum along with the rest of us. If you did, you will also enjoy the sequel.

In Night at the Museum: Battle of the SmithsonianNight at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian many new historic characters are literally brought to life as the mystical tablet is moved from the Museum of Natural History to the Smithsonian. Larry Daley (played by Ben Stiller) must help his friends as an Egyptian (played by Hank Azaria) wants to take over the world after thousands of years at rest.

Amy Adams is charming as Amelia Earhart. But I think one of my favorite actors in the film is Hank Azaria. He's one of those actors who you don't give much thought about, but who is so versatile and adept at accents. Some of my favorite one-liners were delivered by him.

The filmmakers really upped the ante bringing even larger historical characters to life in this sequel.

I know I said this was a run down of films for mom (and dad) to watch, but my young daughter also really enjoyed this movie. Other than the fighting, there is only one short scene that might be a little scary for younger kids. But my daughter likes Scooby Doo and I don't think was scared during this scene. The movie is PG, so you may want to watch it first to determine if it is appropriate for your own kiddos.

(From the DVD:) History is larger than life—and twice as funny—in this monumental comedy sequel that’s “better than the original” (At the Movies)! Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast (including Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria and Robin Williams) as Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come to life after dark. But now Larry’s nocturnal friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institution, luring him back for a hilarious, all-out battle against museum misfits who plan to take over the Smithsonian...and the world!

The Proposal
PG-13

The ProposalThe Proposal follows the same green card conundrum formula that we have seen before, but this time the person about to be deported is the woman. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are both cute in this romantic comedy and you'll enjoy appearances by other well-known actors such as Betty White.

In the film we uncover that people are not always what they seem (of course), especially when taken out of their element or forced to confront their families. Do they get married? You'll have to watch and see.

I thought it was an entertaining film to watch and would recommend it as a light-hearted (dare I say) chick flick.

(From the DVD:) Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) terrorizes her publishing house co-workers with her abrasive, take-no-prisoners management style, especially her overworked assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). But when Margaret is threatened with deportation to her native Canada because of an immigration technicality, the quick-thinking exec announces that she and Andrew are engaged to be married. Ambitious Andrew agrees to go along with her scheme—if there’s a long-awaited promotion in it for him. Everything is going according to Margaret’s plan, until an overzealous immigration official makes it his business to prove that the couple’s engagement is bogus. To demonstrate her commitment to her new fiancĂ©, Margaret agrees to celebrate the 90th birthday of his colorful grandmother (Betty White) — in Alaska. The editrix’s type-A ways put her at odds with her eccentric future in-laws with hilarious consequences, until the Paxtons teach Margaret a thing or two about family.

This was written by Leighann who can be read at Multi-Minding Mom where she dishes about family, food, foraging, frivolity, and more!

Please read our disclosure statement. I was sent copies of these DVD's to watch for the purpose of this review.
