LeapFrog Tag Junior: Getting Books in the Hands of the Preschool Set

My five-year-old daughter loves the LeapFrog Tag Reading System. The pen and special books enable her to "read" the story and interact with the books.

Her little brother is constantly bringing me her carry case with the Tag and books. But he is just too young to work the pen and to not destroy the paper pages.

That's why I was thrilled when I found out that LeapFrog developed the Tag JuniorLeapFrog Tag Junior system designed for two- to four-year-olds.

The Tag Junior uses board books and a chunkier pen that younger children can easily grasp. The included book is a simple story featuring wild animals. But the line of books that you can purchase separately include familiar characters such as Dora,DoraCurious George,Curious George,Pooh,Pooh, David, Mr. Brown, and more.

The included book is an abbreviated book with fewer pages than the ones you can purchase. Don't get me wrong, my son has "read" it again and again, but he was ready for more. During my weekly trip to Target I picked up the Cars,Cars, 1-2-3 Dora!,1-2-3 Dora!, and Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? books.

When I plugged the Tag into my computer to upload the audio for the newly purchased books, I didn't realize that you have to download the Tag Junior software from the website before connecting it. I assumed that since we already have LeapFrog products that I could skip that step, but you can't. Once I figured that out, I had the new books quickly loaded up on the Tag Junior pen.

The board books are very thick and sturdy and I am impressed with the quality. I also love that my two-year-old very quickly learned how to use his LeapFrog Tag JuniorLeapFrog Tag Junior. He sits for long periods reading and re-reading the books and listening to the sound effects. One thing I appreciate is that anything a child touches with the pen responds (unlike some other brands of similar books that do not).

The Tag has repeatedly taken falls from our bar height table and still works. Oh, and I almost forgot a little addition to the Tag Junior: You can program in your child's name and it greets him and says goodbye. Kind of cool.

The LeapFrog Tag JuniorLeapFrog Tag Junior comes in traditional LeapFrog greengreen, but also in purplepurple if you are feeling a little sassy!

My son loves it, and my five-year-old has even read each of the books a few times. She thinks it's great and is happy for her little brother that he gets to "read" too!

If you haven't done so already, enter to win a LeapFrog Tag system and the two sets of Learn to Read Books. Enter by September 21, 2009.

This was written by Leighann who can be read at Multi-Minding Mom where she dishes about family, food, foraging, frivolity, and more! She reads, and reads, and reads some more to her children.

(LeapFrog sent a Tag Junior for our family to test drive, but I purchased three of the Tag Junior books on my own.)
