I love to read. I just wish now that I have two kids that I had more time and energy for it. And more space for books. Our small home is over run with toys, art projects, and board and picture books. I cleared off my bookshelves to make room for the kids' things, passing along boxes of my books to friends.I realized that though I love to read, having a huge collection of books isn't practical for me. I have already done two things that are both great for shelf space and for the environment: borrowing from the library and listening to audiobooks. But I have just found another way to get the satisfaction of reading and actually seeing a book and owning it so that I can go back to it again and again. Enter EcoBrain Books.
At EcoBrain Books, you can download eBooks in PDF format to store on your computer. As an added bonus, every two weeks there is a different book that is free to download.
How is this good for the environment, you ask? Every book that is purchased digitally is one less tree that is cut down for the paper. And every less book shipped from publisher to bookstore and then transported by you in your car to your home, is less fuel and polution.
If you haven't read an eBook before, take advantage of their free downloads.
From the company:
Reading eBooks saves trees and reduces pollution. We all know that when we buy a book, it comes from a tree. It is no secret that many trees come from ancient forests. Forests are a place of majesty. Forests are dynamic habitats where soil can regenerate, birds can sing, bears can thrive, and the air is purified...Research shows that eBooks are on par with reusable water bottles and grocery bags in terms of their ability to give consumers affordable, green buying alternatives. Paper manufacturing practices are among the 3rd largest polluters of air, land and water. Many of the books read today were printed overseas, shipped to the US and other countries by boat, trucked to distribution centers and then trucked to the local bookstore. Based on research from the Palo Alto Research Center it takes about the equivelent 60 watt-hours of energy to produce one piece of paper. One sheet. This number does not even include the printing or shipping. Because eBooks bypass all of these processes, many of them are sold at 30% below retail, making them an excellent choice for budget conscious consumers.
