Classy Mommy Contest

When I was in NJ at Johnson's Camp Baby, I bonded with several women over different things. One woman I bonded with was Colleen of Classy Mommy. She and I both have baby boys and were both pumping during our short trip away from our families. Over breakfast our conversation turned to breast cancer. I was surprised to learn that she had found a lump while nursing her son and had a lumpectomy. Thankfully it was benign and the pain that she had experienced while nursing subsided.

I tell you this because when my son was only a few weeks old, I too noticed a lump. I had a mammogram and ultrasound. The surgeon thought it might have been a galactocele (a build up of milk in the duct) and I was told to wait 6 months for a repeat ultrasound. He also said that when I stopped nursing that the lump would shrink if it was in fact a galactocele.

Six months later, the day after Christmas in fact, I returned for that repeat ultrasound. I was quite startled to receive a phone call that I needed to return for a biopsy. It was not cancerous, but I was told that the cells were inflamed.

When you have a new baby, the last thing that a woman even considers is the possibility of having breast cancer. I can tell you that it was very stressful for me. But I am one of the lucky ones who received a positive prognosis. Others aren't so fortunate.

Colleen is having a fantastic contest to "brighten the day of a Mom who is battling or has battled breast cancer." You are not going to believe the prize package that is worth over $1,000! Head on over to Classy Mommy to nominate someone you know.
